1. Introduction – what is the unifying theme of today’s Scriptures?

  1. Yes, the Resurrection!
  2. But also the Word of God…

  1. What does the Word of God DO?

  1. The Word of God speaks of Christ.

  • “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27, ESV).[1]

  • “Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled’” (Luke 24:44).

  1. The Word of God convicts us of sin.

  • [Peter said:] “‘Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.’ Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’” (Acts 2:36-37).

  1. The Word of God comforts

  • They said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?’” (Luke 24:32).

  1. The Word of God creates

  • “…Since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).

  • “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).

  1. The Word of God continues
  • For ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the Word of the Lord remains forever.’ And this word is the good news that was preached to you” (1 Peter 1:24-25).

Verbum Dei Manet in Aeternum

  • Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away” (Matthew 24:35).
